In An Emergency

In the event of an emergency or product release, PMC personnel are trained to shut down systems quickly and safely, and to immediately dispatch crews to the site.

While companies work to ensure incident-free operations, incidents can happen. If an incident has occurred, PMC responders will ensure life safety, protection of the environment, and stabilization of the incident. We will work in conjunction with the appropriate regulatory and government agencies, they take all necessary steps to clean up the area and take any remediation measures necessary to restore the site to its previous state. See the Incident Management page for further details about how other agencies are integrated into an emergency response.

If You Suspect a Problem

If you encounter signs of a pipeline release, or any other unusual sights, sounds, or smells near a pipeline location or plant, follow these steps:

  • Shut off any ignition sources on or near the pipeline (including cell phones, vehicles, tobacco products etc.)

  • Leave the area immediately and move to a safe location at least 800 metres (half a mile) upwind from the suspected release site

  • Call 911, then call PMC’s 24-Hour Emergency Response at 1-866-875-2554

  • Avoid touching, breathing, or contacting leaking products

  • Warn others to stay away

When a call is received, PMC's emergency response personnel are notified and immediately dispatched to the area to safely manage the situation.

During an emergency, PMC responders will work in combination with first responders and government agencies such as health authorities and regulators, to establish response strategies, as well as clean-up and remediation standards. Air monitoring will also be conducted to ensure the safety of the public and responders. In addition, PMC will dispatch its own resources, as well as contractors and other resources, including mutual aid and specialized response equipment, to site to contain and control the situation.

If necessary, PMC's emergency response personnel will contact effected stakeholders and provide instructions. For members of the public this could include either shelter-in-place or evacuation. For first responders, local and government agencies this could include activation of an Emergency Response Plan (ERP).

Call PMC’s 24-hour Emergency Response at 1-866-875-2554 if you suspect a problem related to our pipelines or facilities.
